Weekly Weigh-In: 2 Weeks Postpartum

Well, here we are again...another Thursday, which means another weigh-in and reverse belly picture!

Starting Weight: 38w pregnant: 153# /1 wk pp: 137#
Last Week's Weight: 137#
Current Weight: 132.5#

Starting BMI: 28.0
Last Week's BMI: 25.1
Current BMI: 24.2 (yay within normal range for my height)

1. Reiterate my goal and where I stand in reference to this goal:

I'm 5'2" and have a goal weight of 115# (BMI of 21.0), so I have 17.5# to go.

I am happy to see that I have already dropped 21.5 lbs and the belly is already shrinking.

2. Discuss what I am going to do to achieve my goals:

Progress on last week's activities:
-Eat three full healthy meals each day, that will get me in my range for calories for my BMI and breastfeeding (7/7).
-Less sweets-Failed on this one =)
-Walk the neighborhood 3 times, at least a mile each. (1/3)

I did pretty well with eating healthy meals, especially because my Mom is here.  I failed on eating less sweets since we have several types of cookies, candies, and my Mom keeps buying cupcakes ha ha =).  Perhaps I will do better next week once it is Logan and I and we run out of the sweets! I also tried walking one day, but I am still in enough pain that I think I need to wait another week or so.  I am looking forward to it warming up a bit and being less windy so I can take Landon out in the stroller or my Beco Gemini Carrier so we can go for a walk!

Activities & goals for this coming week:]
-Less sweets
-Try walking just one day around the neighborhood with Landon
-Drink Water
-Eat healthy meals (this should be harder with just Logan and I on our own with the wee man)

3. Post a (reasonably healthy) recipe that I've tried, a cooking tip, a new idea for working out for people to try, a photo update of my weight loss, or anything else I feel like sharing.
2 weeks postpartum-see that line...apparently that takes 8 WEEKS TO GO AWAY....lovely!

2 Weeks Postpartum Side view
Annie, last week, sent me a link informing me about Diastasis Recti, basically the separation of your abdominal muscles due to pregnancy! I also need to test to see if this happened to me and start looking at exercises to help fix it.  So another side goal to look into once I am cleared for working out!

2 Weeks Old!

Wow, I can't believe Landon is already 2 weeks old.  What is also very strange to think about is today was his "actual" due date.  I can't imagine having to be pregnant that much longer, as well as not having him in our lives!  I was just telling Logan yesterday that I can't really remember what life was like before, except that I was able to sleep longer than 3 hour stretches at night, sometimes less =).

This week has been about becoming more routine for Landon.  We are trying to get him used to eating more frequently since before we were having to wake him up every 3-4 hours, depending on day or night to eat since he would just snooze.  Now he seems to wake up pretty much like an alarm clock ready to eat just about every 3 hours depending on how much he ate the time before.  It's both nice that he wake up and a curse because its harder to wake up from a dead sleep to a fussy baby than a sleeping alarm clock!  We are still working with keeping him awake.  He will eat about 8-10 minutes before he starts getting sleepy while eating.  We are still having to strip him down to just his onesie or diaper to eat; otherwise he just gets close to me and falls dead asleep.  If he isn't sleeping, he is grunting to try to poop...it's rather amusing, although once again at 3 am, it just adds to the length of time we are all up! =).

He gets a bath just about every two days.  We are still waiting for his little belly button to fall off! It looks soooo gross and like it could go any day, but yet we are still waiting lol.  We are going back to the pediatrician (just a weight check) on Monday, so I will have her look at it then! I can't wait to be able to give him a real tub bath and not have to contend with balancing his tub on the sink.

Landon spends the majority of the day either in our arms or his swing. He generally goes through a fussy period around 6-7 pm, which of course is when we eat dinner.  Last night, I nursed him BEFORE 6 pm and dinner was much quieter without a fussy little one to contend with.  So I think that might try to be our new normal so once all our visitors are gone, Logan and I can get some time to talk!  This week he also started napping in his crib for about 30 minutes at a time, which gives me time to get some stuff done.  I put the camera in so I can see him and then the monitor hangs out in the living room so I can see him and hear him if he starts to cry and wants to be moved.

First nap in his crib!

I think he looks like an elf =)

Landon also started waking up ALOT more this week than he has since he has been home.  He has started following where our voices are at and focusing on our faces.  It is fun to see him recognize you.  My favorite time is when he is fussy because he is hungry and when Logan or my Mom hands him to me he instantly calms down knowing what is coming.  It is fascinating to watch him learn the rooms, different smells, and sensations of knowing when it is time to do something, like eating.

Also this week, we broke out the play mat for Landon once we noticed he was starting to focus on sounds and bright colors, patterns, and faces.  Every morning around 11 am, he is pretty awake, so we do play time or bath time depending on the day.  He seems to love to stretch out, since we keep him swaddled a good portion of the day when he sleeps.  He kicks his legs and makes some noises and just overall enjoys himself!

He also had another outing with us this week.  I had to go back to the dr. to get looked at since I felt I wasn't healing up properly...all looked good though, so that was a relief!  It is always fun to have the midwife see Landon since she worked with us almost weekly for 3 months to make sure he stayed put until he was ready to come safely into the world.  We also ventured out to a store for Logan, Landon and I stayed in the car ha ha.  Logan also ran into Panera Bread to get us lunch, while I stayed in the car to nurse Landon, our first real breastfeeding experience in public.  Let me tell ya, that was tough...between trying to hold him in the backseat and use a cover...we will need to work on that.  Logan also had to change Landon in the front seat of his car, because as I talked about above, Landon poops almost like clockwork when we feed him! Logan of course, got pooped on...he holds his thumb up and goes "ewwww, I have poop on my thumb"...it was pretty funny.  Luckily, we had wipes and hand sanitizer to rectify that situation quickly!  So needless to say, it was a busy day, but a successful one.  Now, the next step is for me to stop riding in the backseat with him to make sure he is ok ha ha =).

My parents leave Friday, so this next week we will be alone until Donna gets in to be our next visitor! Let's hope we survive....you will know how it goes based on if I can post a blog next Thursday =).

-Eat healthy sensible foods that will keep enough in my diet for milk production for the wee man.

1 week old!

So I figure I will do a reverse for his age at least for a few weeks, then perhaps go monthly!  Landon has had a busy first week!  We got home last Saturday, the 11th after just about 3 days in the hospital.  It was nice to be going  home, but a bit overwhelming all at once! We realized we wouldn't be able to call a nursery nurse to come get him when we need sleep, but that is also what Grandma is for =).

Going home!

Just born!
I bought these little stickers for his onesie that I will take every month.  This is his just born sticker, he was just about 3 days old when we took this!  I was happy to see they showed up since I ordered them the night before I went into labor.
1st sponge bath at home
Landon had his first sponge bath this week.  He actually reacted very well to the warm water.  I will need to work on doing this alone since my Mom and Logan were around to help with getting a water refill when it got a bit chilly! I am not sure how I will handle that.  Once his little belly button thing falls off we will probably switch to keep him in the tub and that will be easier to get water refilled and not have to worry about the little tub slipping off over the sink.  Hopefully that nasty little thing will fall off soon! Overall, he really seems to enjoy bath time....which is fun, even when he tries to pee on us =).
Happy Valentine's Day!
Landon had his first holiday, Valentine's day!  This kid HAS to have his hands by his face, so it is rather difficult to get his picture taken without his hand blocking his cute face and cute outfit! We will have to work on this.  Glad I bought this outfit for him, I knew he would show up before Valentine's day =).
First visit to the pediatrician, Ms. Emily.
On Valentine's day, we also ventured out to his first pediatricians visit.  We went to a nurse practitioner, who came highly recommended by a friend, who we absolutely loved.  She was great with him and us.  We found out some general information about the practice and really just enjoyed what we had experienced so far.  Landon looks great, he is almost back to birth weight at only 5 days old when he went.  They were very pleased with that.  He already measured 1/2 inch larger, which is shocking how fast they grow.  His Bells Palsy is almost gone and his stitches are healing great. Most of the stitches have appeared to have dissolved and his little cuts are almost healed.  We still need to return to the audiologist at Vanderbilt since he didn't pass his hearing test on his right side, they think it was from the trauma of the forceps as well.  So let's hope when we do go, that he will pass!

Mommy, Landon, and Sadie bonding time

Of all of the animals, SADIE (yes, my demon cat), is doing the best with Landon! She has carried on like nothing in the house has changed!  I am SHOCKED, to say the least.  She gets up and watches me nurse him and lays on the couch with us.  I try to keep her away from his face...we don't need him getting all stuffy from her fluffy tail in his face.  Lola is her usual skittish self.  She hasn't adjusted as well as Sadie.  She keeps her distance from Landon and has since stopped sleeping in all of his things, thank goodness! She will poke her head up to his swing to see what is going on up there, but other than that she keeps her distance.  She isn't aggressive, just indifferent with him.  Rustypants seems a bit more depressed than we expected.  He sniffed and seemed excited when we first brought Landon home, but has since pretty much just ignored him unless he is screaming about something in which Rusty is right on our heals checking on him.  Logan hasn't been paying as much attention to him as before, so I think that is part of the problem.  They have a Daddy/Rusty date to the dog park this weekend.
Landon 1 week old, in a milk coma =)
As you can see he has changed tons in just a week!  He is a sweetheart and only is really fussy around dinner time.  I have been slowly watching what I eat and see if its affects how he feels.  I know if I eat something that upsets my stomach, it probably hurts his!  We have had a busy but good first week!

Also starting to show up on the blog will be my weekly reverse belly shots! I am going to track my weight loss/belly progression! Here is to hoping it goes back to normal!

Until next week =)

Landon is here!

Well we didn't quite make it to posting a 38 week update seeing as I was in labor! This wee little man made his dramatic appearance on February 9th, 2012 at 4:14 pm after about 16 hours of labor.

Here is a short version of his birth story:

At about 10:30 pm on Wednesday night we had just gone to bed when I felt a small pop and felt a gush.  I said ohh and popped up from bed, which followed by another large gush.  Logan woke up and was like "YES, it's baby time!'  So we ran around like crazy people wondering what we should do, clearly the months of preparation for a preemie never fully prepared us for what was going to happen when we went to the hospital.  I finally calmed down enough to call labor and delivery (L&D) and they asked the time, color, and smell of the fluid and told us to come on down.  We gathered the last few things we needed and jumped into the car.  The contractions ranged anywhere from 2-5 minutes in the car ride down, which came in waves of excruciating back pain.  Come to find out his position is what was causing all back labor; I rarely had a contraction that wrapped to my front.  We pulled up to the hospital around 11:30 and were wheeled into the triage area of L&D.  There they had me change into a gown, put on the contraction monitor and heart monitor for Landon, and checked to see how things were coming along and if it was for sure my water that had broken.  Sure enough, I was already 4 cm, 90% effaced, and at 0 station...so a big change from earlier in the day when I was checked by my midwife at a barely 3 cm and 80%.  The contractions began to pick up and they wheeled us over to our birthing room.  Our nurse was AMAZING.  She could tell I was struggling to breath through the contractions and offered some advice on what to do because I was holding my breath instead.  After about another 30 minutes, I requested to talk to anesthesia about my options to help with the back pain.  I decided to wait for more progress until I wanted an epidural.  Well that lasted about another 20 minutes of excruciating back pain and the anesthesiologist was back and prepping me for the epidural.  I was terrified of this before going into labor, but during I could have cared less; I just requested not to see the needle.  They put Logan in a chair in front of me and had me place my feet on his legs and then hunch over so they could see where to place the epidural.  It took about 15 minutes to get everything placed and it was immediate relief.  I vaguely remember thanking the man for stabbing me in the back with a giant needle to make the pain stop ha ha.

After the epi, I calmed down enough to try to rest, which lowered my blood pressure (it had been increasingly high) and allowed me to progress quite quickly. Within the next few hours, I was already to 8 cm.  The shift change was coming and our nurse was sad we weren't going to be ready to have him while she was there, so she promised to come back and see us which she did the following day.  The new midwife and nurses came in and kept an eye on everything.  The midwife was much more natural in the fact she was trying to avoid a pushing marathon, so she let me labor alone for another 5 hours hoping to get Landon to drop more into the birth canal, but even after that time I was fully dilated and 100% effaced, he just wasn't moving.  Around 12:45 pm I started pushing with the nurses who were helpful. Logan held one leg, another nurse held the other, and then one nurse was down seeing how far he was moving when I pushed.  I pushed for 3 hours, until they started talking about interventions because I was quickly becoming exhausted.  They said it was either vacuum, forceps, or a c-section.  The vacuum wasn't an option because he was still too high up.  The forceps were our next choice, because I didn't want a c-section.

This is when things became rather dramatic.  The room quickly filled with an extra 15 people.  The NICU team, several doctors, nurses, a nursing student (who was traumatized lol), and several others   Logan no longer was holding my leg.  The midwife was on one leg, a nurse on another, one nurse by my head holding oxygen to my face telling me to breath and calm down since I was quickly realizing things were more dramatic than I had initially thought.  The OB was then down getting ready to insert the giant forceps that remind you of big metal salad spoons in me, another anesthesiologist was giving me meds to calm me down and make sure I was completely numb, which I was already, but this was just an extra precaution.  I was told to push and keep pushing.  This part is all a big blur to me; I just remember looking down and seeing big metal forceps and a light.  At one point I was so exhausted I was crying too hard to push anymore and the doctor kept yelling push, which I believe it was his last ditch effort to get him out.

Landon popped out and was crying before he was even out.  I remember looking down and then looking at his eye and seeing it was cut from the forceps.  I kept asking if he was ok and they eventually laid him on my chest and told me to rub his back hard to keep him crying and to stimulate him to breath.  After two minutes they brought him to the NICU team to be examined and Logan went with him.

He weighed in at 7 lbs 3 oz., so kind of a chubby guy for only 38 weeks.  You can see his cone head since he was in the birth canal for so long...he has a few bruises on his head as well from the birth and the forceps.

Logan did get to cut the umbilical cord like we had planned.  Here is the first picture of father and son; think he is a proud papa? I think so =).

I was still being pieced back together on the table after an episiotomy at the last minute and a few other tears.  I  was so numb, all I could feel was pressure and asked what I was doing.  I remember I kept asking if he was ok and the midwife kept telling me he was, but his eye was needing to be looked at from the plastics department to make sure no long term scaring would occur.   After I was all fixed up they brought him over to me to try to feed and he did great.  He showed great interest but couldn't quite get the latching thing down.  Logan followed Landon to the nursery where plastics looked at him and determined he would need stitches and also had a bit of nerve damage from the forceps; referred to as Bells Palsy.  His is VERY mild, I personally can't see it, and it should resolve within the next week or so as things heal.

He had to stay in the nursery a bit longer than we thought, which was fine because I was headed to postpartum and was still so exhausted, physically and emotionally I needed time to recover.  My Mom got there around 7:30 and we finally asked if Landon was ready to come out of the nursery after his bath and proving he could keep his temperature up!  We spent several hours with him bonding and trying to feed which was going better.  Then had him spend the night in the nursery except to try to feed so that we could catch up on sleep.

We were able to come home after two days in the hospital and we are all home doing great.  Landon goes for his first doctors appointment tomorrow to check on his stitches and overall health!

Ok off to go give him his first sponge bath and feed him, then perhaps a nap!

37 weeks=FULL TERM!!

How Far Along: 37 Weeks

Size of Baby: At this point Landon should be close to 19.25 inches in length and 6.3 lbs, roughly the size of swiss chard.  Once again...I need to Google this veggie to see what it actually looks like.

Maternity Clothes: Same old same old....Currently lounging in Logan's pj pants and a maternity tank top!

Weight Gain: Didn't look again this week =).

Belly: 37 week picture:

Stretch Marks: None yet and I check daily after my shower =).

Sleep: Getting worse...I rarely sleep from 4 am-7am and then I fall back asleep after a morning snack until around 10.  I feel this is natures way for getting me ready for Landon.

Best Moment of the Week: Making it to February! I can officially say that I am due this month! Who would have thought we would have made it this far. Also, on facebook I follow a local photographer who was giving away a $75 gift card for a newborn photo shoot!  Well I emailed her and told her we were expecting and a little bit about our story and we won! We got the card today in the mail and she told us to call to set up an actual date about 5 days after his birth so we can get it done!  I am super excited, even though it will be a bit of an investment, to be able to celebrate his birth and welcome him to the world after such a trying pregnancy!

Movement:  Landon has been having a party in there lately...constantly.  He keeps me up at night, which is part of the reason I think I am sleeping poorly, in addition to the constant bathroom trips and pain.  I was joking with Logan he is throwing his own going away party and getting ready to move on out.

Symptoms: Back, hip, leg pain, snoring, and now add in high blood pressure.  I am being watched for pre-eclampsia which could mean Landon will be forced to come before he really is ready...which is frustrating considering we worked so hard to keep him in from preterm labor just to have a possible pre-e issue evict him before we are all ready! Frustrating...

Food Cravings: Nothing this week really...I have been feeling pretty full so I am not too hungry lately.

Gender: Boy-Landon!

What I Miss: Not running into stuff with my huge belly and all my pre-pregnancy clothes.  I can't wait to get back into working out and losing weight.

What I'm Looking Forward to: Having a healthy baby boy...whenever he decides that is.

Nursery: It is mostly done! Just waiting for those stupid letters!

Weekly Wisdom: One day at a time...as the L&D nurse said today each minute, hour, or day he stays in the better until he is ready to enter the world.

Milestones: We officially made a full term pregnancy! Although 37 weeks is full term, most babies come around 40 weeks and for first time mom's the average is closer to 41 weeks. A new study have shown that baby's brains go through another huge surge in development between 35-40 weeks, so clearly it's important to try to keep Landon in so his little brain can develop as much as possible before birth.  Although, I can't imagine him staying in another 4 weeks...I don't think that will be an option ha ha.  I told Logan recently I hit my pregnancy limit and am ready for him to come as long as he is healthy. The midwife and the doctors/nurses at L&D today kept saying  it will be soon...well we have been hearing that for several weeks and yet here we are! Surprise to everyone, including myself.

Emotions: Just worried about the birth and Landon and a bit anxious about getting to the hospital on the hour drive and the pain....we watched a birthing class dvd we bought online since we didn't get to go in person to the one we had scheduled and talked to Mallory about what to expect during labor and after birth.  She had lots of good suggestions for both Logan and myself; it is nice having someone in the family who is in this line of work =).  I think Logan is ready and I am on my way to mostly being ready.  I am starting to venture out more starting this next week and am actually going to start walking the neighborhood.  I think getting a bit of exercise will be good for me and Landon to get him moving down even lower!

Until next week...
